Spuffy Memes
The Spuffy world is richly self-referential. Notions appear and re-appear in the corpus. Here I catalog the recurring motifs. (A/N This is but a start now.)
- The Secretly Horded Engagement Ring—Buffy keeps Spike's skull ring from their short ‘engagement’ in Something Blue
- Soul Mates—Spike and Buffy are; Angel and Buffy are not; No such absurd concept. The last is least common; A consensus of Spuffy writers aver that Spuffiness is predestined.
- A Perfect Fit—Buffy and Spike ‘fit’ each other, emotionally and physically. The emotional fit is the fundamental dogma of Spuffiness. The physical fit is manifested in a number of different ways, from a relatively innocent admission from Buffy that she's pleased she doesn't have to crane her neck to kiss Spike (as opposed to the hulking fellows she's been with before), to detailed and sometimes anatomically precise expositions of why Spike's penis was destined for Buffy's vagina. The quintessential expression of this meme is the utterance, in flagrante, of the “I never knew it could be like this” cliche by Spike or Buffy (usually Buffy, since Spike already “knew it could be like this”).
- Buffy's Insatiable and Athletic Sexual Appetite—A slayer's physical needs are more robust than an average woman's. Spike, not being a man in the physiological sense, satisfies them like no other can. (“Vampire's get you hot.” “One vampire got me hot!”) A common starting point for dealing with the ‘Riley Problem’. Of course this reasoning qualifies Angel to be Buffy's Sexual Salvation, but the curse and any number of his profound character flaws make this alternative ridiculous. To be fair, the show added quite a bit of grist to this particular mill, what with demolished houses and all.
- Vampiric Stamina–Vampires have outstanding sexual endurance: this encompasses great ejaculatory control and an essentially non-existent inter-coital refractory period.
- The Sacred Blowjob—Spike-and-Buffy-Fucking can occur almost accidentally (indeed the intense, almost gravitational attraction between Buffy's vagina and Spike's penis is a topic for an essay in itself) and doesn't necessarily signify any great emotional involvement in the activity except perhaps seething hatred or bitter resentment, but Buffy-Sucking-Spike's-Cock is an admission of any combination of love, devotion, adoration, (not gratitude which is perfectly adequately expressed with chaste kisses), forgiveness, or contrition.
- The Sacred Blowjob with Extreme Unction—Buffy swallows.
- The Divine Revelation of Cunnilingus—Buffy's previous lovers have never eaten her—not Angel, for more (he didn't want to frighten her during their night of passion) or less (he was a selfish yob only interested in getting his shriveled and morally bankrupt epididimus cleared) charitable reasons; not Riley, because he was a nit and often, pathetic and heartless yutz that he was, has expressed distaste for the act. This meme is almost always associated with panegyrics to the exceptional strength, reach, and almost prehensile dexterity of Spike's tongue. Apparently James Marsters' tongue-behind-teeth bit on the show left a profound impression on many a Spuffy writer.
- They Never Simply Take Their Clothes Off—Buffy and Spike are rarely content to just disrobe for their carnal exploits but must rather each rip the clothing from the other's body, the more rapidly to make epidermal contact and subsequently express their devotion in the universal language of wet friction. Sometimes are shown gently and reverently removing each other's clothes. This usually is a symbol for the culmination of Spuffiness, when all the emotional walls come down.
- Underwear Is A Crime—Nothing comes between Spike and his Levis. Spike commonly complains if Buffy wears underwear at all; exceptions are sometimes made for panties of particularly satisfactory cut, fit, and/or rapid access features.
- The Hyena Incident—Buffy remembers the events in ‘The Pack’ vividly which leaves her with a profound distaste for Xander. Sometimes Xander's recollection of this episode feeds his twisted obsession with Buffy.
- Love At First Sight—Spike actually started to fall for Buffy when first he saw her dance. Less frequently, Buffy first started to fall for Spike when he stepped into the light in the alley. (More common is Buffy's “Why did the hottie have to be a Vampire?” lament.)
- Special Slayer Muscles—Buffy's slayer abilities extend to the muscles of her vagina, which are not only supernaturally strong but uncannily coordinated. Buffy is often represented as being able to put Spike into a state of blissful orgasmic catalepsy with nothing but a rhythmic, (perhaps peristaltic) undulation of her vaginal walls; no reciprocating motion required. Such internal genital motions are generally represented as being powerful enough to emasculate an ordinary man. (I refuse to be baited into a discussion of the symbolism of 'Cunt as Devouring Maw' but would be delighted if somebody attempted to do so. (Suggested title ‘Slayer Vagina and Vampire Fang: Privilege Inversion in Buffy The Vampire Slayer Fan Fiction’) High marks will be given for any in depth analysis of Caleb's misogyny in this context.)
- It's Hyu-uge!—Spike's cock can find all the hard to reach places in Buffy's pussy.
- Xander Hate—Xander is evil, is twisted, is obsessed with Buffy, will murder the object of Buffy's affection to force her into his warped embrace.
- Angel Hate—Angel is evil, is twisted, is obsessed with Buffy, will murder the object of Buffy's affection to force her into his warped embrace.
- Willow Hate—Willow is evil, is twisted, is obsessed with Buffy…Well no, not that last one, but she is evil and responsible for all Buffy's (and Spike's) woes.
- Buffy Smell—Almost universally Buffy's hair smells like vanilla. Her lip-gloss is fruit-flavored (raspberry seems most common). Her vagina's smell and taste are compared to a number of food stuffs, baked apples, apricots, fine wine, but never fish. There is also a unique and uncharacterizable Buffy-Essence, which always has a profound emotional effect on Spike.
- Spike Smell—Cigarettes, leather, whiskey, blood (and the uncharacterizable but masculine, Spike-Essence).
- Fixing It–The canonical state of Spuffiness is often judged so hopeless (Seasons 6 and 7) that the only way out is traveling back in time to fix it. (In truth this is really a theme, and not a meme; so this is a placeholder for when I get around to themes.)
- Purely Feminine Power–Buffy's dominance of Spike derived solely from her inherent sexual power, unconnected with her power as Slayer.
- Spike's Education–Spike has an excellent 19th century education, Oxbridge, usually Oxford in Classics or Greats. There is no consensus on college affiliation.
